The Sensory World of Animals Lesson Plan
My lab mates and I wrote a lesson plan for 3rd-5th graders to learn about animal sensation and magnetoreception. The lesson is split into 5 activities, which takes ~90min. We designed this lesson to explore how animals perceive the world differently than humans. Students will learn about the ecology of sensory systems and how it relates to an animal’s unique environment. We also dive in to how animal’s can rely on Earth’s magnetic field to find their way. Students will learn about magnetic fields and how to use a compass and map to give directions. We hope this will be a fun interdisciplinary lesson to combine physical and life science.

Sea Turtle Specific Field Work
I've spent a lot of time on sea turtle field sites over the years. I've worked at 3 different sites: Caretta Research Project, Comunidad Protectora de Tortugas de Osa, and Sea Turtle Conservancy, Tortuguero. All three of these sites take volunteers and interns. You can also find global sea turtle fieldwork opportunities by subscribing to the CTURTLE List Serve or checking out the Seaturtle.org job board.

Grad School: Applying to NSF GRFP?

I received the GRFP in 2022. There is definitely a large element of luck to receiving this grant, but my biggest piece of advice is to have lots of eyes read over your proposal. Take suggestions with a grain of salt, and make sure your proposal is unique to you as a researcher. Having lots of people read over your application helps your writing accessible to many different audiences! I also used these two blogs for additional proposal examples and suggestions.
